How To Help A Friend Who Is Too High

You are at a party indulging in some good ole bud with your friends and suddenly one of them is freaking out. Paranoid. Way too high and hating it. Fear not, it happens and they’re going to be fine.

As the good friend you are, there are a few things you can do to help them get through this. No matter how badly someone is greening out, it won’t physically harm them. It can be quite a roller coaster and a lengthy one at that, especially if they had edibles versus smoking.

Peace and Quiet

Alright, first things first, get your friend to a quiet place. If you’re out at a party, the last thing they need is a ton of noise and people if they’re too high. If you can, get them home or somewhere familiar where they will feel comfortable. The best thing you can do is find a little solitude so they can start to relax. Help them focus on their breathing to slow their heart beat down. Have them breathe in for a count of three, hold it for a count of six and exhale for nine. If they’re into yoga, get them practicing their ujjayi breath.

In a calm, but confident voice, remind them that they’re not dying. Don’t get frustrated with them if they are being paranoid or irrational, it happens to the best of us. Let them know that they are going to get through this, that they will be ok, and that they are loved. Sometimes a little bit of love goes a long way to calm someone down. Oh yeah… and don’t tell them to “calm down”.

Greening out is a lot for your body to process. Give them something familiar to focus on, like their favorite snack or a glass of water. Put on their favorite episode of “Stranger Things” (that show is all consuming, even if you’re NOT high!), snuggle them up in blankets and go stargazing, or go for a walk if they’re the nature loving type. Helping to keep their mind occupied while their body processes the high will make time go by quicker for them and give them something else to think about.

If you have any CBD gummies laying around (with zero THC in them), now would be the time to present one to your friend. The CBD will help to calm their anxiety and has been known to counteract some of the negative side effects of THC. But, like we said, make sure it is just CBD. There would be nothing worse than giving your friend something that will only make them higher.

Nap Time

When all else fails, put them to bed! Get them in a safe and cozy place, reassure them that they will be ok and comfort them until they drift off. That won’t take long for some people. For those who are having a hard time relaxing, try rubbing their back while they’re curled up. The gentle, comforting touch of a friend may be enough to help them slip into slumber.

It’s Finally Over

It’s the next morning, your friend is feeling better and you’ve won the “Friend of the Year” award. Well done! Even though greening out happens, there are things you and your friends can do to avoid it. Check out our post on how much to smoke as a beginner or our guide on dosing edibles.
