Four Tips to Dose and Enjoy Edibles
What are edibles?
An edible is an indigestible food product that has been infused with cannabis, such as candy, baked goods, drinks or oils. Your body will interact with the edible in different ways depending on the type.
What types of edibles are there?
When you’re snacking on infused brownies, cookies or something similar, these goodies fall into the gastrointestinal category. What does that mean? Simply, the THC is absorbed through your stomach. These types of edibles typically take longer for you to feel the effects (sometimes up to two hours later), but the effects can linger for up to 8 hours.
On the other hand, edibles that you hold in your mouth, such as a sucker or tincture, fall into the oral category and the effects can be felt almost immediately. The downside to oral uptake edibles is the effects tend to wear off within two to three hours, meaning you need to dose again a lot sooner.
Then there are hybrids, such as infused drinks or chocolate bars, which are designed to be absorbed in both the mouth and the stomach. These type of edibles offer fast-acting effects that typically last for four hours or more. They’re are the perfect middle ground!
Why would someone choose edibles?
– There are many reasons why someone might opt for enjoying edibles versus smoking cannabis.
– Some people simply don’t like inhaling smoke or vapor.
– The body high associated with edibles is distinctly different from the head high typically felt when smoking.
– The versatility and discretionary nature of edibles makes it easy to incorporate them in your everyday life.
– Dosing is made easier by packaging stating the THC and CBD content of the product.
Four Tips to Dose and Enjoy Edibles
Read and understand the label
When first starting out with edibles, we recommend enjoying goodies from reputable companies, versus those that are homemade. It’s so hard to know exactly how much THC is in a home baked cookie. With store bought edibles, you know exactly how much THC and CBD is in each dose. This is especially important when you’re just starting out because you want to ensure your first few experiences are enjoyable ones!
Similar to reading the label, starting out slow is especially important if you are new to edibles. We recommend beginners start with between 5 and 10 mg, wait to see how it interacts with your body and then gradually build as necessary. You can always take more, but you can’t take less. If you find yourself too high, check out our six tips on what to do.
Consider the type of edible you’re enjoying
We’ve established that different edibles react differently with your body. Be sure to consider this when you’re indulging. Are the effects going to be immediate? Roughly how long are they going to last? If you’re new to edibles, be sure you’re enjoying in a safe space and don’t have anywhere to be. If you’ve never tried a certain candy before, you don’t want to find out that the effects take eight hours to wear off when you have a meeting that afternoon. Always enjoy in moderation!
Listen to your body
Similar to alcohol, cannabis interacts differently with every one based on the person, their activity level, the amount of food in their system, or how hydrated they are. 20 mg of THC may interact with you very differently on a full versus empty stomach. Take the time to listen to your body and see how the edible is interacting with you before having another. We recommend waiting at least an hour before having a second dose.
